Burial plot for the Mariners' Home
This memorial is located near the NS2676 : Bow Road entrance of Greenock Cemetery (that entrance is also shown in NS2676 : Greenock Cemetery).

The inscription reads: "Sacred to the Memory of the Seamen of Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Asylum", and "Home is the Sailor / Home from Sea".

[The lines "Home is the sailor, home from sea" are from Robert Louis Stevenson's poem "Requiem" (they are sometimes attributed, mistakenly, to A E Housman; almost identical lines do appear in a poem by A E Housman, but only because that poem was written, later, as Housman's tribute to Stevenson).]

This is just one of three plots within the cemetery that were reserved for the Mariners' Asylum (as it was then known); see NS2677 : Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Home for further details. See also NS2676 : Memorial to Adam McKay.

For a view of one of the other two plots, see NS2676 : Burial plot for the Mariners' Home. According to the "Greenock Cemetery Walks" booklet (see the end-note), 357 people are buried in the three plots.
