The inscription on the obelisk is as follows:

"Erected in memory of Adam MacKay, son of George MacKay, tacksman (Achairn, Caithness), sometime Quarter Master Sergeant 93rd Highlanders, and for about 20 years House Governor of Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Asylum, Greenock, died 14th August 1877, aged 63 years."
