The Ivy House, Greenock Cemetery
The Ivy House, Greenock Cemetery
This building stands at the upper end of a driveway leading from the main entrance to a small car park, from which numerous paths branch out through the cemetery.

A plaque high up on the wall on the far side (on the right) of the building records that it was "Removed from Wellpark 1852". The "Greenock Cemetery Walks" booklet produced by Inverclyde Council (see the end-note) states that "the Ivy House was originally part of the Shaw Stewart estate", and that on being removed from the Wellpark, it "became the lodge for the person in charge of the cemetery. It is now used for storage".

Robert Murray Smith, in his 1921 "History of Greenock", while writing about a time fifty years earlier, states that "of the two dovecots that were then in Well Park one is still to be seen as the curator's office in the cemetery grounds". This would account for the building's unusual shape; compare, for example, a NS3978 : Doocot near Strathleven House.

[My thanks to fellow contributor Thomas Nugent for alerting me to a recent (August 2017) news item about this building: the council had planned to demolish it, but, after the intervention of Historic Environment Scotland, it has been saved.]

For the Wellpark, see NS2875 : Wellpark well. As for the "Shaw Stewart Estate", Sir Michael Robert Shaw Stewart owned a great deal of land in this area.

The cemetery, which is laid out on Bow Hill, opened in 1846.
