This stone has stood in front of the Neuadd Goffa/Memorial Hall in Cricieth ever since the hall was built. It is a "test of strength stone" which was used by local lads to show their strength and manhood. It came to attention again when, in summer 2010, an English strongman, Roger Davies of Hemel Hempstead tried, and failed to lift it. Roger was defeated after 11 attempts at the stone, which is estimated to weigh between 160-180kg. However, on the last weekend in September 2010, two local brothers, Reuben and Dafydd Myrddin Hughes, each managed to lift the stone. Dafydd said: " ďWe realised after seeing Rogerís story that this was the stone that our father lifted many years ago. He only did it to 15 inches and it wasnít recorded, but we were inspired to try it ourselves, and I have to admit itís a real challenge! Itís so difficult, and you really donít realise how big and awkward it is until you are standing over it. We both managed what is called a grade one lift (clearing the ground), but it was tough!Ē
