Memorial to Neil Dougall
Memorial to Neil Dougall
"This tribute of respect is erected by his family in memory of the late Neil Dougall (author and composer)", who lived from 1776-1862. His wife, Margaret Donaldson, and other relatives are also commemorated in the inscription.

When Neil was four, his father, a carpenter who was impressed into military service, died on Ceylon. After completing his schooling, Neil likewise went to sea, and served first on the Britannia, and then on the yacht Clarence. When the latter was in Greenock, news arrived of Lord Howe's victory (the "Glorious First of June") over the French naval forces. The crew of the Clarence planned to celebrate by firing the yacht's guns; however, an accident occurred, and the resulting explosion blinded Neil, tore off his right hand (later, much of that arm had to be amputated), and badly injured his face.

However, he would later prosper in a new career, teaching music; several of his own compositions were published, such as the collection "Poems and Songs" (published by J.Blair in 1854).

The Neil Dougall memorial is location № 4 on the Blue Walk in the "Greenock Cemetery Walks" booklet (see the end-note).
