Pissarro painted here
Camille Pissarro stood on this bridge in 1871 to paint his famous picture of a steam train heading south from Lordship Lane station towards the painter - see LinkExternal link. This is the view now as the railway line closed in 1954 and woodland has enveloped this part of the old trackbed, although in the other direction the former trackbed provides a walking route through Sydenham Hill Woods - see Link. For more information on Lordship Lane station and the former line to Crystal Palace High Level see LinkExternal link..
