Pissarro's bridge in Sydenham Hill Woods
Pissarro's bridge in Sydenham Hill Woods
This is looking towards the footbridge in Sydenham Hill Woods from which the view is seen in Link. Camille Pissarro stood on this bridge in 1871 to paint his famous picture of a steam train heading south from Lordship Lane station towards the painter - see LinkExternal link. The railway line closed in 1954 and woodland has enveloped this part of the old trackbed, although in the other direction the former trackbed provides a walking route through Sydenham Hill Woods - see Link. The Green Chain Walk crosses the bridge as described here Link
