I know nothing about the building on the left, currently a restaurant, except that it has a very large arch encompassing almost the whole facade. The motif is redolent of Robert Adam, but the stepped frame around the building is redolent of Art Deco, suggesting a date of around 1930. (It was originally a cinema and, in another life, a music venue, The Venue.)
Next door is T.M. Sutton Ltd which has been described as the 'Harrods of pawnbrokers'. It was built in 1934-35, the architect was Reginald W. Lone. To quote from the listing, "of special architectural interest for its striking and well-detailed Moderne fašade and good, intact shop front, and wealth of interior fittings, including the privacy booths in the rear, which are rare, possibly unique, survivals ... the premises of one of London's oldest pawnbrokers which became a high-class international establishment in the early-C20. It is thus rare, if not unique." Information partly from the Twentieth Century Society (LinkExternal link ). Grade II listed.
Despite this, both are threatened with demolition by the large-scale (and, it has to be said, much-needed) modernisation and expansion of Victoria underground station. A proposal has been made to dismantle and move Sutton's.
