The OS map of 1897 shows that there was a smithy in this location and just to the north, by the roadside, a pond. This acted as a goal in the annual Shrove Tuesday Ball Game NZ3528 : Sedgefield Shrove Tuesday Ball Game sculpture

Sedgefield Heritage Trail :: NZ3528

On a good day, the town looks very pretty and has much of interest. A good place to start is the Heritage Trail which is available on the web LinkExternal link and as a leaflet available locally (try the Council Offices off the High Street near Hope Inn).
