Sir John Gladstone plaque, King Street
Sir John Gladstone plaque, King Street
Plaque commemorating the birthplace of John Gladstone, who began his business activities in Leith and made his fortune trading in corn, cotton and sugar, whilst making full use of the free labour made possible by the trans-Atlantic slave trade. He was a prominent figure in the parliamentary faction which resisted and delayed Abolition. After a successful career, he returned to Scotland to live the life of a country gent and paid for several philanthropic gifts to his home town of Leith.
