The name of this pub dates from the time when Carlisle had a ship canal - the basin was maybe 200m left of this location. An old painting
Link shows some quite large sailing vessels, which were towed here by horses from the other end of the waterway at Port Carlisle
NY2462 : Old sea lock on the Carlisle Canal . The Carlisle Canal was operational from 1823-1853, it closed for economic reasons and was replaced by a railway.
The present pub was built around 1903, on the same block as the original Jovial Sailor, which was demolished (information from Carlisle Breweries and Public Houses 1894-1916 by S.Davidson
