Claymills Victorian Pumping Station - D engine condenser
Claymills Victorian Pumping Station - D engine condenser
Underneath one of the 1885 Woolf compound rotative beam pumping engines. The big cylindrical object is the jet condenser with the exhaust from the low pressure cylinder entering via the angled pipe. It is met by a spray of cold water from the valve and pipe top right of centre and is condensed to provide boiler feed water and a partial vacuum (20-25" of mercury). The vacuum provides extra power and improves thermodynamic efficiency. The little inverted L shaped pipe and valve are the vacuum breaker, used on stopping and in an overspeed situation. The rod on the right controls the auxiliary (starting jet) water. The grey lagged pipe in the background is the steam main for engines C and D. This is not a public access area.

The lower half of the condenser is seen here - SK2625 : Claymills Victorian Pumping Station - under 'D' engine
