Old Man's Beard seed-head
Showing how it gets one of its names, this is the seed-head of Old Man's Beard or Traveller's Joy (Clematis vitalba). A common plant in the south of Britain, it is a vigorous climber, often reaching 40 feet or more. As it grows and matures, the stems become very thick and gnarled.
