Lerwick: the Old Tolbooth
Lerwick: the Old Tolbooth
The second Tolbooth building to occupy the site, the current building dates from 1767. A steeple, later with bell and clock, was added in 1771 but was removed in 1927.

The top floor originally contained one large room, used for functions such as Masonic Lodge meetings, and two small prison cells. The two rooms on the ground floor were used as a courtroom and schoolroom, the latter converted to the sheriff-clerk's office in about 1825.

The new police station having been completed, in 1878 the building became a post office and a "Fisherman's Institute". A Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen took up the building from 1912 to 1962. The (then Zetland) county council purchased the Old Tolbooth in 1964 and in 1968 it was sub-let to the British Red Cross, the WRVS and the Shetland Tourist Association.

The Old Tolbooth was condemned in 1999, but was renovated on a large scale in 2003-05, including removal of a two-storey extension which had been added on this side in the 1880s. Today it is home to Britain's busiest lifeboat station.

The lifeboat can be seen in the harbour in the background.
