Scalloway: Shetland Bus memorial
Scalloway: Shetland Bus memorial
The so-called Shetland Bus was a clandestine operation during the Second World War, a series of boats making up to 100 trips between Shetland and German-occupied Norway to convey agents over their and British citizens and fearful Norwegians to safety in Shetland. They could run only duiring the darkest hours and their main source of protection was being surrounded by ordinary fishing boats.

This memorial commemorates those who lost their lives during the operation of the Shetland Bus, named in four plaques such as the one facing us.

For a close-up of the boat, see HU4039 : Scalloway: Shetland Bus memorial detail.
