Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle sits on top of an outcrop of the Great Whin Sill. It has been a fortified location since the 5th century. The Normans built the first castle here. After the Wars of the Roses the castle fell into disrepair. The building seen today is Victorian, built by the industrialist William Armstrong. The castle is privately owned but open to the public.

Great Whin Sill

The Great Whin Sill is a large igneous intrusion into the rocks of Northern England. The intrusion is dated at 295 million years ago; the rock is dolerite. Several classic locations of Northern England owe their location to this sill : Hadrian's Wall, Farne Islands, Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle.
