Record numbers of salmon have been recorded in the River Tyne, making it the best river for the species in England and Wales. Hexham road bridge weir NY9464 : Weir on River Tyne below Hexham Bridge is thought to be a threat to salmon's ability to progress up river because wartime gravel extraction has increased the height difference.
