This wooden effigy is carved from solid oak, and overlaid with gesso.
Walter was a franklin, or landed gentleman. His family were stewards to the Audleys, related to the great family of Mortimer.
The Helyons acquired property in Much Marcle and became owners of the manor known as Helyon's and later "Hellens" See SO6633 : Hellens Manor
In 1348 Walter made over the Hellens property to his only child, Joanna, who married Richard Walwyn of Stoke Edith.
Cross legged effigies are very rare, it symbolises piety.
