Jarlshof - View from the Laird's House northeastwards
Looking out northeastwards from an elevated position on stairs in the Laird's House. In the foreground I think the walls belong to the Laird's House; at the rear to the left is part of the Norse (Viking) settlement; rear straight ahead (with a signboard in front of it) is the remains of the mediaeval farm dating from the 1200s.
The small stones set in grass in the foreground are gravestones thought to date from the 1700s.

Jarlshof is a fascinating excavated site on the very southern tip of the Shetland Islands near Sumburgh Head.
The site encompasses buildings from most of the ancient historical periods. Amazingly these have been kept separate such that they start with neolithic dwellings on the eastern side of the site and spiral around in a clockwise fashion through Bronze Age, early and late Iron Age, 2nd & 3rd century wheelhouses, Viking, Mediaeval and finally the C16th Laird's House. This represents a truly remarkable 4000 years of history on one site.
