The Castle Keep was built by Henry II between 1168 and 1178. It is one of the finest surviving examples of a Norman keep in the country. It is a Grade 1 listed building, and a Scheduled Ancient monument. Owned by Newcastle City Council and leased to the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne, it is open daily to the public.
