Cathedral crypt?
Not at all.
This is the interior of the disused reservoir No.1 at Papplewick. Built in 1883, the reservoir was out of service by the 1930s due to cracking of the brickwork, probably the result of mining subsidence, allowing water to leak. The reservoir is now cared for by volunteers from the adjacent restored pumping station, and is open for visits during most steaming weekends. The chambers are lit by a small number of floodlights producing some striking lighting effects.
