Air shaft and spoil heap, near Badminton
The air shaft is one of several over the Sodbury Tunnel which takes the Paddington to Bristol Parkway railway and points west under the high ground east of Old Sodbury. The shaft is surrounded by the spoil that would have been excavated during the original tunnel engineering works to sink the shaft. The tunnel is about 4 kilometres long and starts about 415 metres east of this shaft. The railway is about 130 metres above ordnance datum whilst the shaft sits on the 145 metres aod contour.
