The Grassmarket
The Grassmarket
The Grassmarket is an historic market square in Edinburgh’s Old Town, directly south-east of Edinburgh Castle. From 1477 to 1911, it was one of Edinburgh's main markets for horse and cattle. It was also a setting for public executions.

For most of its history the Grassmarket was one of the poorer areas of the city although property prices have risen sharply since the 1980s. The area is, and always has been, dominated by a series of public houses. In recent years many have become more family-friendly, and include dining areas. The Grassmarket has recently (2008-10) been re-developed with measures aimed at making the area more pedestrian-friendly including the extension of pavement cafe areas giving a more ‘European atmosphere’ to the space, together with the creation an "events zone".
