St Botolph's - Choir Stall Carvings - 18
The last two carvings in this sequence are those on ends of the choir stalls nearest the nave. They are both quite similar being depictions of human heads. This one is on the southern set of choir stalls. The head wears a cap and its shoulders have been carved into acanthus style leaves a little like those on the top of a Corinthian column. The gentleman depicted here may be representative of a Turk or a Saracen or possibly what was known as a "Blackamoor" - all three of which featured as heraldic emblems at the time, but why there should be the representation of an Islamic person in a Christian church I cannot explain.
St Botolph's - Carvings
The choir stalls and misericords at St Botolph's parish church, Boston date from the late C14th making them over 600 years old. They are situated on either side of the chancel just after the arch that separates it from the nave.
They depict many strange, wonderful and often humorous beasts and actions. Some are obvious, some far less so, and some of the scenes are obviously allegorical or cautionary. Most of all they are a testament to the ability of those mediaeval carvers who embellished the furnishings of the church with such skill and artistry.
