Launch site of Brunel's Great Eastern
This is one of the two launching slipways from which Brunel's great ship was launched - eventually - in 1858. The slip way continues onto the foreshore where it is supported on a thin skim of concrete. The Great Eastern was originally to be known as Leviathan and a specially commissioned piece of music was written for her. Maritime historian Harley Crossley found a copy and had it performed. It's a nice little piece and he has played it for his lecture on Great Eastern.

The Great Eastern was probably instrumental in launching the reputation of the company of Tangye from Smethwick, Birmingham, at it was its hydraulic jacks that ultimately helped push her into the water.

Time Team produced a television programme on the launch of the Great Eastern and the decline of Thames-side ship building.
