SK3958 : Shirland Golf Course

taken 10 years ago, near to Shirland, Derbyshire, Great Britain

Shirland Golf Course
Shirland Golf Course
Looking north-east to the tower of Shirland church showing just above the trees. The golf course occupies the site of the old Shirland coal mine spoil heaps. The pit was sunk in 1864 and by the end of the 19th century the colliery employed 500 men. The pit closed in 1965 and now there is now no sign of the former industrial activity here.
