I am indebted to AlastairG for the following correction relating to the caption for my picture of moraine-dammed lake, Strath Nethy:
Hi Nic. An interesting photo but the sequence of events is reversed. These fluvio-glacial terraces are post glacial features, formed from glacial deposits, hence the name. Thus, rather than eroding these terraces, glaciers actually provided the raw material from which they are formed. The rivers then cut into the deposits leaving the distinctive terraces. [Ends]
Thanks, AlastairG I hope you will see this message, though I am not quite clear about the process you outline, so I have not amended my caption, as I would prefer it to be accurate (which it clearly isn't yet). If you could propose a better caption I would happily adopt it.
If I could have an initial attempt: The humpy, rocky glacial moraines extend down Strath Nethy as far as this pool and then stop completely. Down the glen from this is what looks like a river terrace, possibly caused by sediment-lader water flowing off the glacier into a deep lake of standing water, held back by a dam downstream which has now disappeared.
