This sessile oak (Quercus petraea) was grown from an acorn collected in 1917 on the battlefield of Verdun in France and planted here in January 1919. It is near the Temple of Arethusa which is the Garden's war memorial, see TQ1876 : Kew Gardens war memorial, Temple of Arethusa.
