Fruit trees near Yew Tree Cottage (and a treat for the horses?)

In the corner of a field near Yew Tree Cottage is what appears to be the remains of an old orchard - a few fruit trees, mostly apple. The field is used as horse grazing, and the considerable quantity of apples on the ground (on this day in early December) looked to me as if they'd been left as a treat for the horses.
