At 8.02pm a 1400 kilo bomb penetrated 32 feet deep and exploded just above the cross passage between the two platforms; broken mains poured water down into the station and a double-decker bus, driving in the blackout, plunged into the crater. The death toll is disputed but the figure of 66 is generally felt to be about right.
