James V's Palace, Stirling Castle
James V's Palace, Stirling Castle
The Palace was built in the reign of James V, who died in 1542, the work being completed in the 1540s. The exterior, a Renaissance facade with classical motifs, is thought to be either the work of imported French masons (James V's queen, Mary of Guise, being French), or of Scottish masons working under their guidance. The new 'Court style', as it has been called, can also be seen at other royal residences of the Stewarts, namely Linlithgow Palace and Falkland Palace. The facade has many statues depicting classical and mythological figures.

"Here is to be remembred that ther wes mony new ingynis [contraptions] and devysis, alsweil as bigging [building] of paleicis, abilyementis [accoutrements], as of banquating and of menis behaviour, first begun and used in Scotland at this tyme, eftir the fassione quhilk thay had sene in France. Albeit it semit to be verray comlie and beautifull, yit it wes moir superfluous and volupteous nor [than] the substaunce of the realme of Scotland mycht beir furth [resource] or susteine; nottheles, the same fassionis and custome of coistlie abilyements indifferentlie used be all estatis [ranks], excessive banquating and sic ilk [such like], remains yit to thir dayis, to the greit hinder and povartie of the hole realme." -- John Lesley, Bishop of Ross
