Abbey Pumping station - beam engine detail
One of the four Woolf compound beam pumping engines built in 1891. This shows the crank and big end. As built, I'm sure the crank web would have been polished, not painted. Beyond is the forward sewage pump that is driven off the beam. This is a bucket and plunger pump that has suction only on the up stroke but that delivers on both strokes. This produces a more even delivery action. The big column bottom right is helping to support the main bearing and transmits reaction loadings to the foundation.
