Inscription celebrating the marriage of Edward Jenner
Inscription celebrating the marriage of Edward Jenner
Inscription in the porch of Kingscote church celebrating the marriage of Edward Jenner and Catharine Kingscote on 6th March 1788. They originally met three and a half years earlier in September 1784 when Edward Jenner undertook a pioneering hydrogen balloon flight. Taking off from Berkeley Castle, the balloon floated eastwards and landed on Kingscote Estate, frightening the locals who were reaping in the fields, but obviously impressing Catharine. Relaunching the balloon from Kingscote, it's thought it drifted northwards and landed on Birdlip Hill, near where today there is an inn named the Air Balloon. ST8196 : Kingscote Church
