For a corresponding view down from the top of the falls, and for further details, see NS4276 : Spardie Linn.

Ledges of harder material (Spout of Ballagan sandstone) can be seen here; the burn flows across this sandstone upstream of the falls. The waterfall was formed when the burn began to cut through the softer material (Ballagan Beds) beneath the sandstone (see NS4178 : Ballagan Beds in Auchenreoch Glen).

The foot of these falls is not particularly easy to reach. However, the present photograph was taken after a prolonged period of wet weather (which caused flooding elsewhere in Dumbarton), and the falls would rarely flow with more force than they did on this occasion.
Spardie Linn
Spardie Linn is a waterfall on the Overtoun Burn; in total, the falls are about 8 metres (30 feet) in height. They are mentioned by name, as "Spardie Lynn", in a 1609 charter by James VI. At the top of the falls, the Overtoun Burn flows over ledges of hard sandstone; the falls have developed as the burn has gradually cut through the softer material underneath (Ballagan Beds, consisting of layers of shale alternating with layers of cementstone). Just below the falls was a turbine house, part of a hydro-electric scheme Link to supply electricity to nearby Overtoun House (see Link for the house).
