Showing the location of the James Hill sculpture on Bottle Bank below the abutment of the Tyne Bridge. The Hilton Hotel rises on the left. Details of the sculpture are given here NZ2563 : Memorial sculpture for James Hill, Bottle Bank
The artwork is built and carved from Blaxter stone Link
from the same quarry NY9289 as the Tyne Bridge Wall abutment Link
(Archive Link
)
Before the High Level Bridge was built in 1848, Bottle Bank used to be a busy main road from the south to the Old Tyne Bridge Link

Hill lived at the Hawk public house on Bottle Bank where he was probably employed as a professional musician. Several of his tunes are named for this area [from sleeve notes to Tom McConville's 'Fiddlers Fancy', celebrating the music of James Hill].
Bottle Bank may seem like a good place for recycling (there were 18 pubs here in the late C18th) but actually comes from the Old English suffix -botl, settlement or dwelling Link
Much of Bottle Bank was demolished to make way for the new Tyne Bridge in the 1920s and 30s Link
(Archive Link
) although some buildings on the west side remained until 2001 for the building of the Hilton Hotel Link
