Without doubt this is the most photographed subject in this area, both on and off Geograph. Although called a castle, it seems to have started life around 1480 as a multi-storied Irish tower house. For a long time it was in the ownership of various members of the O'Brien family, who descended from Brian Boru, High King of Ireland. Tacked onto it, if that's the right expression, was a manor house in 1648. By the end of the 18th century and unoccupied, the buildings fell into ruin. As no person or body has taken on responsibility, the buildings slowly continue to deteriorate.
