About 200 people had put up camp on the south side of the church of St Peter Mancroft (seen in the background) on Norwich's Haymarket on 15 October. The camp forms part of the Occupy protests around the world. A small group remains.

Inspired in part by the so-called Arab Spring, the Occupy movement was initiated by the Canadian activist group Adbusters. The Occupy movement is an international protest movement primarily directed against economic and social inequality. The first Occupy protest to receive the most coverage was Occupy Wall Street in New York City, which began on 17 September 2011. By October 9, the Occupy protests had taken place or were ongoing in over 95 cities across 82 countries.

Update: The camp was cleared on 20 March 2012 after Norwich City Council was granted an order to remove the protesters from the site.
