James Brindley was bound apprentice here to the millwright and went on to achieve fame in a variety of engineering projects including the famous aqueduct for the Bridgewater Canal at Barton in Lancashire. The Macclesfield Canal, just across the road, was not, however, one of his works and was, in fact, one of the last built before railways superceded them.
