Footbridge over the Overtoun Burn
Footbridge over the Overtoun Burn
On the far side of the burn is a fairly steep slope. In this photograph, the line of the top of that slope reaches its highest point a little left of centre; it was probably there, on a small crag overlooking the burn, that a Folly Castle used to stand; see NS4276 : Former site of the Folly Castle for a view of that spot from the top of the slope, and NS4276 : Ruins of the Folly Castle for much more information on the folly itself.

See NS4276 : Footbridge over the Overtoun Burn for a view of the same bridge from the other side of the burn.
Former site of Folly Castle
James White of Overtoun had a folly castle, in the form of a ruined ivy-covered tower, built on a small crag overlooking the Overtoun Burn. The memorial stone of Bishop Scrogie of Argyll was built into the folly, which was demolished c.1970. See also Overtoun House: LinkExternal link
Overtoun House Nature Trail :: NS4175
Locally, the woodland walks within the Overtoun Estate are still collectively known as "the Nature Trail", in memory of the fact that they used to be laid out as a nature trail with numbered marker posts (the Nature Trail, made with funds left over from the Quality of Life Experiment, officially opened on the 26th of April 1980). New waymarkers were added, both here and in the adjacent Lang Craigs Woodland ( LinkExternal link ), in May 2015. For more on the Nature Trail, see Overtoun House: LinkExternal link
