Passmore Edwards Public Library, Newton Abbot
Still the public library after 102 years, though there are problems in presenting a modern service in a building like this. Designed by Silvanus Trevail, and at the start of the C20, quite an ambitious project for such a small public authority, albeit generously financed by John Passmore Edwards in memory of his mother. Proud terracotta details around the grey limestone. Since the opening up of the area in front of the new supermarket opposite, its facade has become even more prominent.
