City Art Gallery, Mosley Street, Manchester
A handsome building by Charles Barry, 1824-35, with an impressive Ionic portico flanked by columns in antis and three-bay wings, attic above, and all-round rustication. It is largely top-lit, hence the predominance of solid wall over windows in the main facades. Grade I listed.
It was built for the Manchester Institution for the Promotion of Science, Literature and the Arts.
The paraphernalia of Manchester's (very popular) tram system intrudes here somewhat.
