Moorland memorial
Moorland memorial
A poignant memorial, that reads:
"On this spot John Calvert of Goathland fell asleep, 18th June 1907, aged 77 years".
From some genealogical research we find him in the 1891 census living at Church House, Goathland, aged 61, with his wife, son and daughter. His occupation is "whinstone breaker". Perhaps he was up here, on the moor, still doing the arduous job of breaking stones, when he died. His death was reported in the Whitby Gazette, but I haven't yet seen a copy of what it said. The event was obviously important enough for someone to place a memorial here.
