The object on the left is the upturned root-plate of a tree which fell in one of the two great storms of the late 20th century - in October 1987 or January 1990. In the weeks after the 1987 storm I remember being told by Bill Cathcart (arboriculturalist and Deputy Superintendent of the Park) that storm damage had demonstrated that many trees were more shallowly rooted than had previously been thought.

After taking this photo I examined the remains, hoping to identify the species. All that remained - apart from the roots - was a short stump without bark. That would suggest that the tree was not an oak, since fallen oaks are generally left in situ, as habitat for insects.

Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve.
