SP2998 : Blue brick houses west of Atherstone

Blue brick houses west of Atherstone
Blue brick houses west of Atherstone
On the main A5 just to the west of Atherstone are two rather remarkable houses. The reason that they are so unusual is that they are built entirely out of Staffordshire Blue Engineering Bricks. These sort of bricks are normally reserved for industrial, or large engineering purposes - or were used as the damp course on some Victorian houses. They are unbelievably tough and resistant to wear, and I should imagine that, as far as the brickwork goes, these houses look exactly as they did when they were built, probably the best part of a century ago. For a closer view of the nearer house see SP2998 : House built of Engineering Bricks
