Carved Panel at Leadloch (2)
Carved Panel at Leadloch (2)
This panel is in the wall to the right of the top corner of the modern picture window in the low wing to the left of the farm house. It would not surprise me to be told that it had been moved from an original position above an older door or window when the picture window was installed. What does surprise me is what it says. Leadloch is definitely not in the part of Scotland where tartan, or the plaid, were traditionally worn before the reinvention of Highland dress in the 19th century; the 16th and 17th century Waddells, and almost certainly also the 18th century ones, would have been horrified at the idea of donning Highland dress. (Note for anyone confused by the terminology: tartan is the cloth and the plaid is a garment which may or may not be made of tartan cloth.) NS9160 : Carved Panel at Leadloch (3)
