Castle Howard, Mausoleum
Castle Howard, Mausoleum
Designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor in the 1720s for the 3rd Earl as a funeral monument. Work began in 1729, and took over 12 years to complete. Beneath the chapel is the crypt, which contains 63 loculi, or niches, for receiving coffins. The Mausoleum is still the burial place of the Howard family.
