Siemens Ruston Works
This photo of Waterside North and South was taken from the top of Broadgate car park. It is not clear to me when the Ruston Sheaf Iron Works here was built as it has its origin in works belonging to John and Theophilus Burton and J T Proctor listed in city from 1835-1842 and appear to have had works between Clayton and Shuttleworth and Doughty's Mill. In January 1857 Ruston entered an equal partneship and immediately commenced a program of expansion, spending money on land, new buildings and machines. Burton left in July 1857 and Ruston and Proctor and Co. was born. It is probably fair to say therefore most of the works in the picture were built in the mid 19th Century.
