Disused railway bridge near Rothley
Disused railway bridge near Rothley
The embankment carried the line of the Northumberland Central Railway which ran from Scots Gap to Rothbury. The line was opened in 1870; passenger services ceased in 1952 and the line was finally closed in 1963. This section of the line, together with a portion of the main "Wannie" line between Reedsmouth and Morpeth, has been incorporated into a circular permissive "Wannie Line Walk".

There is a small drain in the dip, but it appears that flooding under the bridge is a real possibility. The depth gauge measures up to 8 feet!
