What's left of a bolt
What's left of a bolt
The old Custom House on Queen's Square, Bristol, used to have a nice benchmark. The original 1GL boltmark was installed in the mid 1800s with crisply cut arrows and the bolt driven into the masonry. However, time and tide waits for no man and the years have eroded the cuts, leaving this sorry remnant. The horizontal line where the levelling was defined can still be made out, though. See LinkExternal link for the entry in the Benchmark Database, and ST5972 : Bolt mark in St Mary Redcliffe for a better-preserved example just a short distance from here on St Mary Redcliffe church. Also see ST5872 : Little King Street for its location aside Little King Street.
