'The Star', Station Road, Dorking
This eye-catching pub stands on an oddly shaped plot at the corner of West Street and Station Road. Tile-hanging is frequently seen on buildings in Surrey and neighbouring counties - but the cladding on The Star is of slate. Since getting involved in Geograph I have noticed a few other slate-hung buildings in the South-East, but these include only one other pub SU8601 : The Spotted Cow at Hunston, near Chichester.

Slate-hanging is far more typical of places like Cornwall, Wales, and Cumbria, where slate is a local material. Its use here is puzzling - though I suppose the job of hanging slates presents no problems to anyone skilled in hanging tiles.
